The Association's team currently consists of three staff involving a range of affiliated experts in the area of food technology, food science, marketing, business planning and development, transport and distribution, legal services, accounting, industrial relations and training, marketing and public relations.

Ms Fiona Smith - Administration Manager

Fiona is responsible for all aspects of the FIA’s administration including the liaison with members, bookkeeping, maintaining the FIA’s major industry network database, coordinating training and professional development seminar manuals.

Fiona has previously worked in Australia and overseas with the Centre for Associations Management in WA and the Irish Medicines Board.

Ms Alison Kenny - Marketing & Communications Manager

Alison is responsible to marketing all aspects and services of the FIA and also manages all FIA events such as training workshops, business sundowners, annual awards and exhibitions.  She has a Bachelors Degree in Business & Marketing from Dublin City Univeristy, Ireland and has previous marketing experience from a number of different industries, both in Australia and Europe. 

Alison initially joined the FIA in 2009 to coordinate the 2009/2010 Food and Beverage Industry Awards event.

Ms Anne Furey - Grants Advisor

Anne is a business consultant specialising in assisting businesses to access government grant funding. Anne has successfully assisted private and public companies, tertiary institutions; local and state Government agencies, research organisations and industry representative bodies to obtain a variety of grants from AusIndustry, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Lottery’s West, Austrade and other organisations. Anne assists companies in the preparation of supporting information for grant applications such as R&D plans and budgets, business and commercialisation plans, and with meeting reporting requirements for existing grants and the review of draft applications.

Anne’s background includes working for retail, food, manufacturing, training industry and Government in a number of roles including administration, sales, policy development, stakeholder liaison, and scientific research and analysis. Anne worked for several years with AusIndustry, the Australian Government’s leading grant funding agency and was involved in the assessment of grant applications and grant contract management for a variety of programs including Commercial Ready, Australian Tourism Development Program (ATDP), Building Entrepreneurship in Small Business (BESB) and the R&D Tax Concession program.  

Anne supports the FIA and its members by providing limited free advice to food and beverage businesses on available grants and their relevance to business projects, and provides members a discounted fee for service for preparing grant applications. Technical Advisor/Technical Advisory Team

The FIA offers a wide range of technical advisory services to WA food and beverage businesses in areas such as: manufacturing, sourcing equipment, product development, labelling, legislation, R&D project development, packaging, ingredients, marketing, QA, HACCP and training.

As the FIA works with a range of partnering organisations and consultants all your inquiries will be responded to by qualified and experienced professionals.

FoodNet services are now, since February 2010 delivered by your FIA team and a widely experienced and qualified technical advisor will join the FIA team shortly.

Ms Mardi Tick - Bookkeeper

Mardi joined the FIA in 2008 as an external bookkeeper assisting the FIA with its accounting and bookkeeping processes. Mardi runs her own small bookkeeping business helping the FIA every Friday.

Student - Intern

The FIA engages and supervises students interns. Students working with the FIA are engaged part time or full time either on specific projects or to generally provide support to the FIA's daily operation.  Students come from Food Science and Technology, Business and Commerce areas. Universities included Curtin University, Murdoch University, UWA and Universities in France.

Mr Geoff Palm

APICS WA Committee Member, Procurement Manager, HPS Pacific  - (Excellence in Supply Chain Category only)

Geoff’s involvement in apics began in 1990, when he joined the West Australian Chapter. He has held Chapter positions of Treasurer, Education Coordinator and President.  He then became involved at a National level beginning in 1996 with the position of Regional Representative for the WA Chapter. He has held the position of VP - International affairs and National President in Nov. 2002 to Nov. 2004. Geoff works for Honeywell Limited as HPS Pacific Procurement Manager responsible for the Australian and New Zealand Supply Chain.  Most of Geoff's career has been spent as a practitioner in the environment of purchasing, inventory and production control, after a 13 year stint in the Navy.

Mr Paul Graham

Director,  Market Strategy - (all categories)

Paul Graham is Managing Director of Market Strategy Ltd, a consultancy that specialises in researching, developing and implementing consumer led business strategy. Market Strategy Ltd works across a variety of different food sectors. It has private business, industry association and government clients both domestically and internationally. Paul emigrated to  Australia from the UK 5 years ago. In the UK he held a variety of marketing and innovation roles for a large FMCG food manufacturer (Youngs Seafood), followed by a stint at Sainsbury’s Supermarkets as a category manager. Since arriving in Australia, Paul worked for the National Food Industry Strategy, setting up international business development programs, prior to starting Market Strategy Ltd in August 2007.

Mr Paul Ryan

Director, Global Food Safety Linkages Inc - (all categories)

Paul is a food safety and quality management professional.  He has over 35 years experience in the food industry, covering primary production, manufacturing, distribution, regulation, product development and quality management. He has been instrumental in the development and implementation Australia-wide food safety and quality management initiatives including the development of the SQF Program. Paul holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Science) Major in Food Science & Technology.  He is a qualified Food Safety and Quality Systems Auditor and holds qualifications in Quality Management, canning technology and HACCP. Paul has recently returned from a 5 1/2 year assignment in the US as Executive Director with the Food Marketing Institute. His role was to introduce and roll out the SQF Program to meet the needs of US retailers and their suppliers. Paul has established his own consultancy business to service the agrifood sector in Australia and the Asia.

Prof Garry Lee

Prof for Food Science, University of Western Australia - (all categories)

Professor Garry Lee trained as a chemist and his research spanned the food, water and environmental fields.  He has led scientific research and development activities including large network programs in excess of $5 million.  Most recently, he was the Chair of the Australian and New Zealand consortium PROOF.  Professor Lee has served on many food advisory boards and national and international science bodies.  He is involved with Codex Alimentarius and has been a consultant and advisor to parliamentary and industry bodies.  Professor Lee is currently the Professor of Food Science at the University of Western Australia.  His research interests include food provenance, safety and authenticity, food contaminants, phytochemicals and nanosensors for food volatiles.
